Help Me Buy A Phone!
Hey, you! Yes. You. I want your help. I’m in dire need of a new phone. My trusted Sony Ericsson K850i has kicked the bucket! It is no more! It never really was that trusted either, kept locking up on me, refused to accept incoming messages and acted like a bitch at (most) times! Its behaviour has made me turn from the love child of swedish and japanese scientists to … this is where you come in.
I haven’t got the slightest idea of what to get. I’ve been contemplating the iPhone, a couple of Nokias ( N82 / N95 ), HTC Diamond and many others. These are all smartphones. Do I really need a smartphone? I used my K850i mainly for texting and calling. The camera was handy at times, but it never really was that important. It had a pretty mediocre solution for playing music, so I never used it. I would love a phone that could subscribe to podcasts and quench my thirst for Radioresepsjonen, though. One device. Multiple uses. Phone. Camera. MP3-player. Portable Gaming. GPS. I would love a phone giving me all this. But what to get? Please leave a comment with your suggestions or e-mail me at ‘thomas at this domain’. Cheers. (:

I don’t know why, but I’d expect you to say the iPhone, Magne. Your feedback is appreciated and Nokia is now in the lead! : D

I’ve had several phones the last two years of my life because I used to work at a phone store.
I went from a simple Nokia to a Nokia N95. It was amazing. Oh-my-gosh, you can actually do more that send SMS and answer phone calls. It had a built-in browser, photo gallery, calculator, GPS. Insaaane.
Then I tried another business-Nokia. Mostly the same, just a bit uglier.
And then I had to try Windows Mobile on a HTC Touch. Touch my ass. It was craptastic. Slow, needs reboots, stupid UI, you need to have stylus. It’s actually just good for mail. Just barely.
Then came the HTC Diamond. It was the first time I had a blue screen on a phone. Not exactly blue screen, but there was a scary error every now and then that freaked me out. And the phone is slow as hell. It’s like running Crysis in Pentium 3. The funny thing is that it was supposed to be usable without a stylus. Hell no. Just forget it. And the screen is kind of too small aswell. And when I tried to take a call the touch screen didn’t turn itself off. Whaaat? So I pressed all kinds of buttons while talking to the person. (However, I think you can turn it off manually)
I think you should get an iPhone 3G. The reason is many. iPhone is art. It’s the phone on top of the hill. Companies like HTC, RIM, Nokia and Palm has launched their “iPhone-killers” to the market with failure upon failure. The industrial design on iPhone is unparalelled. Every tiny bit of the phone has a reason for why it’s there, and it’s done in a way that’s just too fucking good. It’s the phone reinvented.
The first thing I noticed is how insanly responsive the touch-screen is compared to other touch-phones. It has a App Store with thousands of cool apps you can download for free or purchase (and you can make your own apps too xD). The iPhone is simply fun. The GUI is super. Believe it or not – the keyboard is amazing aswell. The SMS-GUI is simply super (and patented of course). Everything about the phone is quality. The iPhone is atleast 5 years ahead any other phone on the market.
If you don’t want Netcom, you’ll pay 4290kr for 8GB and around 5000kr for 16GB at any NetCom-store.
- now officially iPhone-fanboy. When you get one, you’ll be one too. :)

Nokia is crap, utter crap. I had a N95 and it was slow, slow and slow. The camera was slow, the menus were slow and every now and then I had to restart the phone because it had crashed.
I considered a HTC, but after hearing about so many problems with the quality of the product, like scratches and stuff falling apart and breaking.
Guess that leaves you with an iPhone. Funnily enough it’s the same phone I ended with ;)

I’m very happy with my N95, and yes, while it had a few issues in the first firmware version, the latest versions has been awesome. Coupled with Nokia’s SportsTracker, you even have a complete tracking solution for logging trips, runs, biking .. etc. The N97 is supposed to launch during Q1, so .. yeah. I’m going to try that one too.
HTC is a no go here.
iPhone .. yeah, you’re probably going to be more than happy too.

Go for the Iphone 3G imo!
I have the firs gen. phone, but I’m thinking of upgrading to the 3G version.

@Bjørn Thanks for the great feedback, very helpful! : )
@Peter Was it the 8GB N95? And heh, seems like the iPhone might be an “obvious” choice.
@cow Please do, I’ll be at Begby friday night! : )
@Mats Yeah, that’s also a point. Its successor is just around the bend(!), but the price tag will be way too hefty for me.. : /
@Martin Hehe, it’s just _that_ good, eh?
Thanks for all the feedback, folks. It’s pretty much been narrowed down to the iPhone or Nokia N95. The iPhone is getting great reviews from most (if not all) but it is a tad more expensive as well. Definitely heading down to the Local Mobile Phone Sales Person™ and trying both of them out. Thanks again. : )
